Teens and distracted driving

Teenagers in the South End of Louisville are typically more susceptible to distractions and dangerous driving conditions than other age groups. Their propensity toward distractions coupled with the dangerous road conditions in Kentucky can be devastating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that in just one year, more than 3000 people lost their lives as a direct result of distracted driving. Clearly, this epidemic should not be taken lightly. Teenagers in particular should be educated about the potential consequences of not focusing on the road.

According to Students Against Destructive Decisions, distracted driving could account for up to one fourth of all roadway accidents. While texting and driving is a major source of this distraction, there are other causes as well. The presence of passengers, especially peers, may be enough to take a young driver's mind off the road. In fact, some organizations recommend limiting the number of young passengers that a teen driver may take. It may also be wise to restrict the time of day in which teens can get behind the wheel, since the majority of accidents involving teens happen after dark.

It is important to make necessary preparations before getting on the road whenever possible. This includes music selections on the radio and adjustment of seats, mirrors and other controls. Teenagers should try to avoid making phone calls, applying make up or doing their hair while behind the wheel. Operating a motor vehicle is a tremendous responsibility, and teens should understand the gravity of their role as drivers.
