Post-accident tips for drivers

While most people in Kentucky may take great care to drive defensively and safely but that may not always be enough to prevent them from being involved in a motor vehicle accident. Sadly there remain many drivers who do not stop to think about the consequences of their choices or actions and operate vehicles in careless manners. When an accident does occur, it can be important to know what steps to take.

As State Farm Insurance explains, priority number one should always be tending to the medical needs of anyone who may be injured. Calling to get help as soon as possible is often a critical component to providing the care people need. After that, avoiding any further accidents should be considered and one way of doing this is by moving vehicles off to the side of the road. If that is not possible, the use of flares, hazard lights or other warnings can give oncoming traffic a signal that there is an obstacle ahead to avoid.

Some drivers may think that an accident that appears minor when it happens does not require notifying the police. NerdWallet disagrees and encourages motorists to call the police, sherrif or local law enforcement after any type of accident. Depending upon the nature of the situation, the accident report may be completed by officers or may need to be completed by the drivers involved.

Making use of a smartphone can be a great way capture essential documentation. Pictures can be taken of the accident scene, roadway, vehicles and even the other driver and their license plate and driver's license.
