Can you encourage your teen driver not to text while driving?

Texting and driving, while seemingly harmless to some, can quickly cause destruction that leads to severe injuries or death. If you have a teenage driver in your home, chances are you have already experienced a growing concern about protecting your child from the dangers of using his or her phone while driving. Fortunately, there are preventative steps you can take to discourage this careless and dangerous behavior.

Psychology Today suggests ways in which parents like you can effectively set the precedence for phone-free driving. These include the following:

  • Establish consequences: If your teen driver does not know of a consequence for manipulating his or her phone behind the wheel, it could be more difficult to enforce your rules. Establish clear, firm and realistic consequences and stick with them.
  • Educate: Do not hesitate to sit down with your children and have a conversation about the dangers of texting and driving. Discuss statistics, consequences and the often-deadly outcomes of distracted driving.
  • Be responsible for your actions: There may be times when you succumb to your own weaknesses and send a quick text while driving. If this happens, be quick to apologize and acknowledge your mistake. By maintaining transparency with your child, you can demonstrate responsibility and reinforce the rules you have set.

Perhaps the most effective way to teach your young driver to be fully attentive, is to demonstrate by example. In a survey of parents and teens, it was found that 75 percent of teenagers had witnessed their parents manipulating their phone while driving. You can teach a most valuable lesson about not texting and driving by simply setting the standard yourself.
