Warning: Aggressive drivers risk lives

People who have felt the tension and anger of being stuck in traffic may have experienced road rage to a certain extent. In fact, road rage is extremely common among Kentucky drivers, as well as motorists across the United States. According to AAA, eight out of 10 drivers admit to having aggressive behaviors while on the road. These negligent drivers engage in reckless driving behaviors that put the lives of other motorists and people at risk. Aggressive drivers cause serious car accidents, which may result in injury and death of innocent people. Approximately half of all traffic fatalities involve aggressive drivers, and men are three times more likely to be aggressive on the road than women.

It is important that motorists be able to identify the signs of aggressive driving in order to avoid being involved in a catastrophic car accident. These hazardous behaviors include the following:

  •          Excessive horn honking, use of profanity or inappropriate gestures.
  •          Changing lanes, cutting others off and then blocking drivers from making lane changes.
  •          Tailgating or following another vehicle too closely.
  •          Failing to adhere to traffic signals and stop signs.

Once of the most common signs of road rage is speeding or racing other cars. Since speeding is involved in at least one-third of fatal motor vehicle accidents, it is especially important to stay away from these drivers.

If one should come into contact with an aggressive driver, he or she should avoid making eye contact. People should avoid engaging in a confrontation with the angry driver and never return inappropriate gestures or profanities. In some cases, you may want to contact law enforcement and alert them of the reckless driver.
